Fondée en 1926 sous le nom de Northwest Airways pour transporter du courrier entre Minneapolis/St Paul et Chicago. Le nom actuel fut adopté en 1934. Le transporteur fusionna avec Republic Airlines en 1986. Fusionnée avec Delta Airlines le 31 décembre 2009.
