Lauda Air fut fondée par Niki Lauda, ancien champion du monde de F1, en avril 1979, comme compagnie charter et air taxi. La licence d' exploitation de lignes régulières fut accordée en 1987. En 1990, la compagnie reçut la licence pour l'exploitation de lignes internationales qui avaient été auparavant réservées à Austrian Airlines.

Formed by former world motor racing champion Niki Lauda, initialy operating charter and air taxi services. Scheduled operations were licenced in 1987. In 1990 the airline obtained licences for international flight which had previously been reserved for Austrian Airlines.
