Fondée le 15 octobre 1932 sous le nom de Tata Airlines. Rebaptisée Air-India International le 8 mars 1948, elle fut nationalisée le 1er août 1953, transférant tous les vols domestiques à Indian Airlines. Le terme "International" a été retiré du nom en 1962.
